Mutants on XMM
Although the movies do a good job helping to set out the feel of what it means to be a mutant in movieverse world, things have changed in the years that we've been playing in it. We've put together a brief guide to what's going on with mutants - in the world and in the United States. This is meant primarily to help people have a consistent sense of setting and theme and to provide the broad strokes of the world we live in as it pertains to mutants. Odds are good there's a lot we haven't covered here - and that's largely intentional. We want people to feel free to fill in details as needed for play, within the confines of an overarching theme.
In general, we hold that mutants have been known, although extremely rarely and only by certain people, for roughly the past century; speculation suggests that they could be older. Mutants have been public knowledge for the last two to three decades, and they have been a small, but growing and visible minority, for the past dozen years or so. We assume that there are less than 100,000 people in the USA who'd test positive for the X-factor, and that of those, about 20% manifest in such a way that they or others would identify themselves as mutants. Most of that 20% would be quite low-order mutations, such as moderately enhanced eyesight, or low level empathy.
If you have questions about details, want to brainstorm for gameplay, or just wonder what other people think, feel free to ask on the game theme forum.
