Policies: Characters
On XMM, we have two types of characters. We refer to these as Main Characters (MCs) and Supporting Characters (SCs). The reason we choose to do this is to allow those players who enjoy having many characters the opportunity to expand, as well as to provide flexibility and color to our world.Main Characters
- Players may have up to three MCs, and must have at least one MC.
- MCs are defined as those characters who are actively involved with the X-Factor team on a daily basis, such as field agents and support staff.
- The focus of the game rests on MCs.
- Main Characters are subject to the idle policy.
Supporting Characters
- Players may have up to five SCs.
- SCs are defined as those characters who are not actively involved with the X-Factor team on a daily basis. They can be normal citizens, family members, friends, as well as villains and outside informants and contacts. However, they should have a specific connection to X-Factor or the team. IE, they should have a solid relationship with more than one team member, live near enough the base for intermittent contact, or serve a plot purpose.
- The focus of the game is NOT on SCs. Players should not expect plots to be run for SCs and should understand that SCs exist as supporting players to the main story. They provide color and flesh out our world, and do not have full on-camera stories of their own.
- SCs are exempt from idle policies and will be reaped only upon request or upon the reaping of all MC characters from the same player. It is perfectly acceptable to only play an SC once every several months as needed. They can be considered on demand characters.
- FCs will typically not be allowed to be applied as SCs, except in places where they serve a particular plot purpose. Please talk to staff if you'd like to apply a FC as a supporting character.
- If you would like to apply for an FC, type 'FCs' to see which FCs are currently being played. Check with staff to see whether an FC has previous on-game history that will need to be considered.
- FCs should check with staff before causing permanent harm to their character, getting married, having children, etc, etc. As FCs are often taken up again by new players, drastic changes to them should be carefully thought out. Changes supported by documented RP will most likely be approved.
- FCs should be recognizable as the character they claim to be. Staff reserves the right to have a chat or request explanation for actions or on-going trends that seem to be out of character. Players, however, should refrain from criticizing anyone's portrayal of an FC personally. If you feel that an FC is consistently out of character, talk to staff.
- We ask that players of FCs do not delete their journal if they choose to drop the character, and that they give staff the password so that future players can use the same journal.
XMM:XF is a fast-paced game. It can be difficult
to stay involved if you are not logged in several times a week.
Any Main Character (MC) which goes unused for 30 days without prior notice is eligible for reaping. We give all idle MCs a warning and one week to communicate with staff about their absence. If we haven't received a response after a week, we will delete the character object.
Character squatting is considered the same as idling, and will be treated as such.
If your MC idles out, staff will remove them ICly from active status. Options for achieving this can include transfer, retirement, and even character death. If you idle in the middle of a plot, your character's presence will be continued to be assumed. Staff or other players will assume reasonable use of your character. If your character can heal, if necessary, they will do so. If your character is needed as part of a distraction, they will distract. If telepathy is necessary to get certain information, your character's abilities will be assumed.
Supporting Characters (SC) are not subject to idle reap, and will be reaped only upon request or upon the reaping of all MC characters from the same player. It is perfectly acceptable to only play an SC once every several months as needed. They can be considered on demand characters.
Character Squatting
We consider character squatting to be a general average of less than a scene a week (4 scenes a month). In the event that we feel that you're in danger of character squatting, staff will check in with you to determine whether the situation is temporary due to outside circumstances. If so, we'll work to make the low-activity work ICly as well as OOCly. If not, you'll be given a probation period to bring your activity back up.
If you have not become active by the end of your probationary period or communicated with staff within a week, we will proceed as we do with the idle process. You will be given a warning and one week to communicate with staff, after which point we will delete the character object. The character will be removed from active status, with IC explanations including transfer, retirement, or even death.
