Using Semagic with LJ

Semagic is a free client that takes some of the pain out of posting to livejournal. In particular, it's very nice if you have more than one journal and would prefer not to log in and out. You can download it here.

Once you have semagic installed and run it, you'll see this screen. Here you can input your username and password - if you want it to remember your password for each LJ, just check the box. This way, you can choose the journal from the dropdown and log right in. 'Skip login' lets you write posts offline for posting later.

You'll want to be able to switch from journal to journal easily once you're logged in. To set it up to do this, click the 'options' button, then be sure 'fast user switching' is checked. Glance through these tabs - a lot of them have useful things you can set!

Once you have fast user switching turned on, you can use the dropdown in the upper right corner to move from journal to journal. Communities are also listed here for posting.

Stealing a log from another player who already posted it? Right click and choose 'paste as text' to get rid of all the formating (like line breaks) that LJ tries to put in. Otherwise, just paste normally!

For quick lj-cut'ing, highlight the text that you want to be your cut text and then just click once on the lj-cut icon - it'll do it automatically! If you click on the arrow next to it, it'll drop down a box with options that let you do other lj-cut type things.

You have some options for viewing text here. I work in plain html, but you can also use 'WYSIWYG', or 'what you see is what you get'. Toggle it at the bottom of semagic. Note that there's also a preview button down here! There are lots of typical 'rich text' type formatting tools on the top as well.

The little infinity-looking sign is your link tool. If you have a web address copied on your clipboard and you highlight some text, then hit this button, it'll automatically create the link with the highlighted text. The icon with the little colored shapes is your 'insert picture' button. The URL of your picture goes in the 'internet address' box.

There are a ton of options down here to choose from and play with. A rundown:
  • Purple: Use this to 'lock' your entries. Most XMM entries are public, but you may want to set one private or lock it to your friends list for some reason. This is how.
  • Yellow: Use this to choose your userpic. It'll show up to the right when you choose it. If they aren't all showing up, hit 'update'.
  • Blue: Use tags to keep track of your entries. Most people tag with the names of the characters in the scene, but some also like to tag by mission, location, event, etc. Separate tags with commas. Click the arrow to see a list of all the tags you've ever used in semagic.
    • It is easy to keep separate taglists for different journals. Here's how:
      • Go to your semagic folder.
      • Insert a textfile named 'taglist.USERNAME.txt', where 'USERNAME' is your username.
      • For communities, taglist.USERNAME.COMMUNITY.txt.
      • NOTE: You can actually do this so that some journals have their own taglists and some share taglist.txt, because if it doesn't find one for your username, it will use the default.
  • Red: These are options for backdating. If you want to post your log on the date it happened but are behind, you can use this. Note that backdated entries do NOT show up in friends lists, so no one else will see it. To backdate, check the backdate box /and/  uncheck 'update time automatically' and choose the appropriate date.

Some final things:

  • Red:  The little 'people' icons let you manage your friends, either one at a time or in a group. They also let you see who has you added, and changes and updates.
  • Blue:The calendars let you edit past entries. The first brings up a list, and the second brings up the last entry you posted (if you want to edit a community post, be sure  1) it's your post and 2) you have semagic set to the community, not your personal journal). There's a setting in options under 'history' called 'always edit in main window' that you may want to check if you'd like to use the formatting and other tools to edit.
  • Purple: ABC check!
